Definition and Usage

The pathinfo() function returns an array that contains information about a path.

The following array elements are returned:

  • [dirname]
  • [basename]
  • [extension]

Syntax

pathinfo(path,options)

Parameter Description
path Required. Specifies the path to check
options Optional. Specifies which array elements to return. Default is all

Possible values:

  • PATHINFO_DIRNAME - return only dirname
  • PATHINFO_BASENAME - return only basename
  • PATHINFO_EXTENSION - return only extension

Tips and Notes

Note: The pathinfo() function returns a string if not all elements are requested.


Example 1

print_r(pathinfo("/testweb/test.txt"));
?>

The output of the code above will be:

Array
(
[dirname] => /testweb
[basename] => test.txt
[extension] => txt
)

Example 2

print_r(pathinfo("/testweb/test.txt",PATHINFO_BASENAME));
?>

The output of the code above will be:

test.txt
